VEDA VYASA - GREAT MASTER He is also called Krishna Dwaipayana and is believed to be the avatar of Bhagawan Vishnu. He was a person of vast literary and missionary accomplishments. It was he who complied the Vedas into four - Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva and it is this astounding effort that gave him the title Veda Vyasa. He wrote the 18 Puranas (main epics),18 Upa-Puranas (subsidiary epics) and is the author of the grandest and largest epic - the Mahabharat which contains the Bhagawad Geeta - one of the greatest scriptures of the world. He is also the author of the Bhagawat Purana and the Brahma Sutras. But for him we would not have had so vast a range of Hindu literature. His greatness as a teacher may be fathomed by the fact that his Jayanthi (birthday) is celebrated as Guru Purnima. So glorious and wondrous are his spiritual accomplishments and the treasure he left for the world through his works that many wonder whether it could have been just one person. Let us be proud that we belong to a culture which produced such mighty masters who live on, forever, in the minds of men. Subhash Chandra Bose (1897 - 1945 AD) "Give me your blood, I will give you independence" - these were the famous words of Subash Chandra Bose. What he meant was that if something great is to be won, one must be ready even to sacrifice one's life. Even as a child he could never take insults from his British teachers who used to freely criticize our culture. He passed the I.C.S. examinations with distinction but he was not for living a luxurious life. He opted for a life of service to the nation. His revolutionary speeches inspired the people of India and deeply angered the British who deported him to Burma. But from there, he escaped in disguise and formed the National Army and with the help of Germany and Japan and then declared war against Britain. His death is shrouded in mystery. Some believe that he died in a plane crash above Formosa. Whatever may be the truth, his whole life was spent in fighting for our freedom. Whenever we walk along a road or speak our ideas out freely we must remember these great freedom fighters of India who gave up everything in life for the freedom that is ours today. Balagangadar Tilak Also called Lokamanya, was one of the great leaders of the Indian's struggle for freedom. He was born in Maharastra. He founded the Deccan Education Society and spread nationalism among the people. He started the "Maratha" an English newspaper and "Kesari" a Marathi Daily. Through these two newspapers, he spread patriotism and nationalism. He strongly protested against the partition of Bengal in 1905. He was the tender of the extremists in the Indian National Congress. He was sentenced to six years imprisonment and kept at Mandalay, Burma. It was Tilak who uttered. "Swaraj is our birth right and we will hat it". He drew much inspiration from Bhagadwas Geeta and other great Indian scriptures. DR. SIR. C.V. RAMAN - A GREAT SCIENTIST February 28th is celebrated as the National Science day all over India.
