A peasant had a very large family, but his children often quarreled. The peasant knew that if this was how things were going to be, after his time his children would definitely break up. One day he called all of his children and placed before them a bundle of twigs. "Try to break it," he said. They all tried, but in vain. "It is impossible," they panted. "Not really, it is quite simple," he said. "Watch me!" He opened out the bundle, took the twigs one by one and easily broke them. "Dear children," he added, "do you see what unity is from this?" He pointed to the broken sticks strewn all over the floor. Dear children, try this as an experiment. Tie some sticks or twigs into a tight bunch and you will never be able to break it but think of how easy it is to break each twig.
